Abstract
To evaluate the influence of radiation or radiation and chemotherapy on locoregional tumor control and survival, 40 patients with recurrent breast cancer after mastectomy treated between January 1980 at the Yonsei Cancer Center were
retrospectively
analysed. Treatment consisted of radiation alone in 23 patients and a combination of radiation and chemotherapy in the other 17 patients. The patient characteristics of these two groups are comparable. All patients treated with radical
irradiation
received ¡Ã4500 cGy with generous field of involved site or prophylactic irradiation to chest wall and peripheral lymphatics. Locoregional control was achieved in 81% of all patients. Optimal locoregional control was achieved with radical
radiation
therapy. Distant metastasis was developed in 43.2% o fall patients. Five year survival and 5-year disease free survival is 53.3% and 37.4%, respectively The addition of chemotherapy is not beneficial in terms of improving locoregional control and
survival rate, or reducing distant metastasis. The prognostic factor affecting survival is disease free interval between mastectomy and recurrence.
